Art is a cherished thing of human culture. Thousands of years ago cavemen were performing their work of genius on walls and rocks. Picasso revolutionized awkward shapes and figures. Shakespeare made romance look easy. Mozart's music is still filling ball rooms and appearing in motion pictures. Each artist expressed their dreams and ideas on paper, palates or in music, making them a reality and touching the minds hearts and souls of people all over the world and for generations to come.
Today, artists are still greatly valued and skilled. In fact, so many writers, painters and composers of our time perfect their skills that many go unnoticed. With that being said, it needs to be pointed out that there is an entire generation of artists that have gone without appreciation at all. Actually, let me rephrase that. They are noticed. They are liked. And they are copied. Art is art because it is unique. It expresses valued ideas and creativity and people are able to connect with it on a completely different level. The world of fake purses destroys the concept of unique art and insults the intelligence and ability of the artist. (bet you weren't planning on the story going in this direction now were you). Louis Vuiton, Miuccia Prada, Gabriel "Coco" Chanel, Marc Jacobs- these men and women are amongst some of the greatest artists in the world. They revolutionized a simple bag which serves no other purpose other than to carry things. They have made these simple bags so incredibly pleasing to the eye and in such high demand, that people pay thousands and thousands to own one. A purse says everything about who you are, how you dress, and what your true fashion personality is. The Louis Vuiton girl loves to dress up. The Chanel girl doesn't mind a little funk in her life. Everyone knows a girl's purse is just as important as her shoes. Big, small, sparkly, suede, and leather scream who you are, what you like, (and sometimes what season we are in). So what does it say about a girl when she makes a sorry attempt to copy an artist? When she takes the very masterpiece that these artists have perfected and changes the quality of leather or the width or the LV to lower the cost? The fashion world is 100% about expressing your true self through clothes and accessories. It's hard to deny that you can tell a lot about a person just by the way they dress. Pink collared polo with levis a belt and a duckbilled hat? I'm placing 20 dollars on the cute little boy from Virginia. But the boy with the tighter fitted pink collared polo with seven jeans , rainbows and no hat cause his hair is too long and shaggy for one to fit: I'm going with the hot surfer from sunny southern California. Granted, there are obviously exceptions. But it can't be argued with. You change your attire for your grandma's house and the club in New York. You take a little extra time in the morning for the job interview. Your interview might go the same no matter what, but their first impression of you matters too much to chance it. So who are you, and what's that true inner self you're trying to express if you are walking around with a ... dare I say it... fake. The $800 louis was created for the woman who could afford the $800 louis. Not for the 6 year-old girl who wants to be like Britney Spears. If Chanel wanted everyone to own one of her purses she too would have created a thriving industry on the streets of soho- but she didn't. Ladies, don't be someone you're not. Don't take away from the men and women who worked hard in life and wanted to spend their money on a greatly sought after Marc Jacobs bag. Don't take away from the genius's at work who create their special bags with the very intention of making them unique and sought after. You don't truly like the purse for the LV's written all over it. You like it for what it represents. What people will think of you when you are walking around with LV's. And don't try and argue with me. I guarantee that if I had Mr. Vuiton make you that exact same size purse with the exact same quality leather, but it was all brown and no where on it did it have his signature- it would no longer mean a thing. There are some great, absolutely adorable $10 purses. And when you get a job, Coach makes some really cute $150 purses too. And one day, when you have worked really hard (in a job or at finding a rich husband) you go be that girl. You be that woman that Prada wanted to sell her bag to. © Ms. Right

MR has a point.Designer items became popular because they are made of high quality components by practiced artisans--at least originally. The idea of establishing status through a display of sumptuary items (e.g. PRADA, GUCCHI, whatever pardon mispellings I haven't the slightest clue) has caused their prices to rise. Why? Because Paris Hilton et al. want to be the only ones who can display them. Simply, some people will pay more to feel elite, and the fact that they are of higher quality has become obsolete. At this point, they are paying far beyond the value of their component parts and quality of construction.
What's the point? Exactly what MR was saying. Don't go buy a fake whatever, because for the same price you're paying for a fake you could most likely buy a similar bag of the same high quality as the original JUST without the name. Actually, these types of markets are emerging as a direct response to namebrand inflation. Just ask any wine conoisseur. You can buy a $10 bottle of Merlot that is of equal quality to a name brand $100 bottle.
So just ask your self this simple question. DO YOU wanna be the jackass with the cheap quality rip off? Or do you want the same quality without the name?
When it comes down to it, I think MS made an excellent literal point for being an informed consumer, and an excellent metaphorical point in being an original person. If your not rich, and you can't afford something, don't buy the fake, 'cause you're being FAKE=NOT YOU.
In Short,
TO THY OWN SELF BE TRUE
Good job MR

its funny that people competely misconcieve the meaning of my story. The person who taught you to read failed in the comprehension part.. People who are SO caught up in the names and designers will buy it on a fake street corner just so they can parade around and swear they are rich. the purses arent any cuter than any other handbag on the market, it's just a symbol of wealth. I, personally, dont own a single designer, real or fake. Why you ask? Because im not rich and i dont pretend otherwise.and to your comment, i hope i never meet someone like you, so unwilling to hear someone elses side of the story..

Oh man, all girls can't be this incredibly shallow right? Someone please tell me. I hope I never meet you allison. You make the world seem like a place I don't wanna see.on 04/01/05 at 02:57 AM
The article was funny and amusing. But I mean Louis Vuitton? Come now, step it up to Hermes. Prepubescent girls sport Coach bags, High school students sport LV, but those who appreciate the best and will settle for nothing less never leave home without the essential Birkin bag.on 03/19/05 at 12:06 AM
My LV wallet says its spelled Vuitton. Please spellcheck before you throw around those names. They mean a lot to the people that own them. And btw I agree entirely with this article.on 03/18/05 at 11:52 AM
Hahaha this article is 10000x better when you imagine it being read to you by Derek Zoolanderon 03/17/05 at 04:54 AM
Good to see young college students in America emphasizing the importance of sporting authentic designer goods -- nothing is quite as satisfying to see how well corporations have turned many of us into diligent and passionate consumers, arguing against buying and wearing counterfeit handbags made in the same sweatshops as the "real" ones.Cheers,

i agree. buy bags become they are aesthetically pleasing, because they match your attitude, not because they are designer. im so over coach and dooney and burke oc trash. those bags are hideous. fuck designer bags. the truth is, it doesnt matter what bags you carry or what you wear in general, its how you wear it and who wears it. ugly people dont look any better with an expensive bag. and hot people will alway still be hot. the point is, it sucks to be fat and ugly. that is all.on 02/01/05 at 07:37 PM
The problem with this article isn't the physical appearance of its author, it's that it's fucking unfunny.Silver

I would say that the point of making comments is to applaud or critique writing stlye, make suggestions, or inquire about anything to do with the "written" article. Attacking physical character or passing judgements based on an article seems to be void of maturity and lacking any relevance. Here is to good and entertainging writing in the future...on 01/30/05 at 12:03 AM
RE: the comment 3 below this one.who the fuck are you? you dont know her...she is fucking hot... it was a good article, its fine you have a different opinion but you dont have to say shit like that. You have always been one of those "hate the world people", jealous people that need to say mean things about people to make your self feel good. Your comment is proof of that.

dude what a lame comment, "Anonymous". the article was good, and wasn't really even angry. incidentally, I looked up Ali on facebook and I think she's kinda cute.on 01/28/05 at 05:14 PM
you've always been fat and ugly. now you're just angry. yet all along, you have always thought you were way cooler than you actually were. this article is proof of that.on 01/28/05 at 01:01 AM
Overcharging someone by a good 3 or 400 dollars for a few scraps of leather with their initials on it is not art. It's robbery. So for the people who like the design but DON'T want to be robbed...I say more power to 'em. Go for the corners.on 01/27/05 at 12:50 AM
being a DIY male, I'm not the intended audience, but like the article nonetheless. good style.on 01/27/05 at 12:48 AM
art is overrated... so are handbags. proof? prada just announced helmut lang's departure. but hey, you're from the university of spoiled children.Add a comment
