Smelt Sands, 25 seconds
Gone but not forgotten, this was shot on a roll of Agfa APX 25 I have been carrying around with me for about five years. This roll of film has been to Rome, Costa Rica, Canada, and California...twice. Always waiting for the "right" moment to shoot, but never actually finding it.
A small group of us stumbled across this beach along the Oregon coast a few weekends back while looking for somewhere that had picnic tables so we could fix breakfast after camping at Cape Perpetua. While driving through Yachats I saw the sign for this state park along with the little symbol signifying picnic tables, otherwise I may never have stopped, and what a beach I would have missed. The whole stretch of coast here is more rock than sand actually, but wonderfully worn and textured rock that quietly occupied a couple hours of our morning and resulted in a number of photographs being taken. So I was rooting around in my bag for a fresh roll to load into my pinhole, knowing I wanted something slow as my exposures had been short enough with 100 speed and I pulled out this roll, hesitated and then figured I needed to shoot it sometime. As rare a film as this is to find anymore, it is tempting to hold on to, but what good is a roll of film if it never gets shot? So into the pinhole it went and this shot is a result. Thanks Josey for passing this roll on to me that lifetime ago, I am sure you would have enjoyed this picture nearly as much as the beach itself. © Zeb Andrews
