Archer Kelly,

Firstly, it is very cool of you to send us thorough feedback.  That is really important to us.  It is also great that you are hanging around here, and we would like to continue to make the Heel Press a cool and creative space for our members.  Anytime you or anyone else has a question or concern please share it here or wherever you feel comfortable. That way we can keep improving the site to fit your likes and make it space where you continue to hang out.

That being said, let me address some of the stuff you brought up.  I agree with you very strongly about the Critique Process.  I think trust in a community like this is very important, and so far people seem to really care about helping their peers out.  We really want to foster an environment like this and help everyone learn from eachother.

As for answering questions in the Critique Panel, you may choose to answer whatever questions you like. You don't have to answer all of them and you may choose to put "Not Applicable" when you feel it is necessary.  If you don't answer a question or select "NA" the creator of the piece is NOT penalized in any way.  The creator only gets evaluated by what you or anyone else chooses to answer.

As for the the ability to edit a rating, that is not possible right now. But I do believe you raise a valid concern and we will work on it.

We will also address your concerns with the question in the Critique Panel that you don't like.  I would also say that if you ever have suggestions for better or more appropriate questions, let us know.  We are trying to make the Critique Process as personal and customizable for our members as possible.

I hope this helps with some of your concerns and thank you very much for taking the time to post them.

Aloha~ I have been checking out the salon and I am enjoying some wonderful artwork and writing. I have also made an effort to participate in some of the critiques, and I have put some of my own stuff out there.

I have some thoughts I'll share here about the mechanics of the site that I am curious about and maybe it will address Ms Catsos question a bit?  The art critinqing process for me is so subjective, and in a public salon there really has to be some trust. We have to believe that people really are trying to be constructive, otherwise we'll close up to the comments. So far my experience has been great.

Within the criteria for photography, some of the questions were not what I wanted to use to "rate" more "nontraditional" pieces, so I only gave a written feedback. I did not however click, "this question does not apply," so I am not sure if doing something like that lessened the rating of the work within the "rating" application? I would not have meant for that to happen.

Also, I see that there is no way to edit a rating I have given, once I have given it, and that is a little unforgiving. In one case while critiquing a piece of nonfiction I hit the rate button by accident and had not calibrated it yet so it reads that I think the piece is a "zero," when I really meant to give it a 9. :( My bad.

As a critiquer, not a reviewer, I am just truly commenting on anything that moves me. And as an artist I have to say that I have never tried to make a piece of work transcend my own personal attachment to it, and make it appealing for the viewers. :p  But thats cool. I know that panels of judges think like that. And finally, hoping I dont sound too bloody critical, why is there an anonymous capacity to comment?

Okay.. there it is. Newbie's random thoughts. Now I am going to check out some of your work. Keep on publishing. :)

hey all,

i've been reading (and enjoying) this site for quite some time now. despite my best efforts to stay away from something that will inevitably consume my time i need for school, i have succombed to joining. i really like the general idea of this site as well as the way that it is set up. i have seen some absolutely intriguing work, and i'm looking forward to experiencing more.

on 10/05/07 at 12:52 AM

hey guys! i'm new here. just saying hello, and i hope to see some good stuff here, hopefully learn some new things, and hopefully become a better writer in the long run. I'll do my best to be a part of this community. thanks!

hi all.  ive been submitting on here for a few months now and have never really had trouble publishing my photos.  lately though, i have submitted some photos i felt really good about and got some really crazy critiques.  one photos was reviewed by 2 people, and from one i got 8-9's across the board, and the other person gave me straight 0s.  just wondering if anyone else has had this experience.  im not meaning to say that my work is fabulous and should always be published- im just wondering about differences that broad, and if perhaps, people need to read the critique guidelines.  im just frustrated.  does anyone have some words of wisdom or englightening advice?

on 09/06/07 at 01:09 AM

Lol, for that reason alone, I shall check out your work.

on 09/05/07 at 12:31 PM

You can view my work too because I'm a pimp.

i recommend reading/viewing nick miller's favorite pieces. he runs the site (along with sam coons) and his favorites are pretty much the best of the heelpress.

on 09/02/07 at 03:33 AM

Hey guys, just joined up minutes ago. I expect to come across some worthwhile pieces here, and I can only hope I'll be able to contribute some worthwhile pieces of my own. Cheers!

(cont.)

Since these are the things that I know I would now like to share some things that I think you should know. Your article has not affected this fraternity or the OSU Greek system in any way. You should know that your remarks are so brainless and shallow that most of the members won't even dignify them with a post that tells you to go to hell or something of that nature. You should know that your comment about the guy stopping you from having drunk sex makes you sound like a rapist. You should also know that as soon as I hit the post comment button you will most likely fall out of my memory entirely forever. You should also know by forever submitting to the idea that you will never be a part of anything more than yourself you will be destined to lead a very cold and lonely existence which will end when you end.

Now is your chance Ryan, the end of my comment so go out and do whatever it is people who hate something do. You can feel free to write another article I won't read. Or you can send me a letter that I would tear up upon reception, or you can shoot me a phone call that I won't answer. You have any number of ideas at your disposal. Just keep in mind when you are doing all of this that its affect will be exactly what you are to myself and all of us; nothing.

on 02/08/06 at 12:31 AM

Oh Mr. Watson,

How low you have become, I mean so the fraternity thing wasn't your deal but now this? Seriously was what we did to you so wrong? I thought that we could have parted ways like men and avoided childish games such as this. I guess I was wrong.

I do have to admire the cleverness of our article but I do have to say it seems somewhat familiar, oh now I know it is straight out of the websites fratty.net and fratdaddy.com. That is great that you put the members into little categories but in true GDI fashion you left out the most important stereotypes that really make these websites ring true they include but are not limited to Johnny frat guy, the token again, the boozehound, and the meathead frat guy. The thing that makes them different from yours is that they are number 1 original, and number 2 use satire in a way that celebrates something that you couldn't be a part of. I know I would feel rather sheepish if I ripped off a really clever website and put it on the internet as my own thoughts.

I really am sorry that the fraternity was not your thing, I am sorry that you didn't realize that you would have to clean up after a party just like every single person that came before you, I am also really sorry that you had to resort to this to express what you went through. I am sorry that you decided to use a picture of a party that you have no legal right to use. I am also sorry you didn't send your article through a spell checker before you posted it.

The thing is, no matter how much I apologize nothing will right the wrongs that the Oregon State Greek system has so obviously given you in your 60 hour involvement with it.

I know that you are going to read this and it will most likely add fuel to your hate ridden Greek fire that you seem so willing to talk about on a public forum. I know that you are going to take a few days and come back with some witty comment that I will probably never read.
