In general I think this is an interesting step forward ... but hm ... I kind of don't see how "the prize" is a prize at all :/ Maybe I'm missing something. Blurb is basically a POD open to everyone, so if any of the current Heel writers/artists want to publish their portfolio they can for free right now without having to "win" the contest. So basically all I'm winning is a bound copy of my own work? :/

I'm much more interested in that print version of the Heel Press I heard rumors about a few months ago :) If the Heel Press partnered with Blurb to put out a monthly "Best of" collection, now THAT would be a prize. Of course that opens up a whole bunch of tricky legal issues with rights and royalities, but still....

Seme,

It is true that Blurb is a company that will provide book printing services to all Heel Press members, or anyone for that matter... for a price.  However,  this new challenge allows the opportunity for the top 4 selected artists and writers each month to make their own professionaly bound book with their work for free.  There are different book sizes and styles, inlcuding hardcover and landscape, to choose from, and we will cover all costs up to $50.  If you win the challege, you have creative freedom to create the book of your choice and share your work with others in a new medium.

To clarify:

the top 4 selected artists and top 4 selected writers (8 total).

sounds great and I believe most people would jump at the chance. As for "the best of heel press" I believe it might be a good idea with a mixture of all of the arts. We are all a little bit vain when it comes to seeing our self in print even in this very modern multi media world.

Whatever happened to the Blurb contest? Whatever happened to the Moleskin contest? Has everyone packed up and left Heel Press (like a MySpace vs. Friendster thing)? Seems like less and less people critique fiction on here. Have people stopped visiting?

Why make it an email? When are you going to update the "Challenge" ? Are you waiting on some Grant money ?  Also, is there any problem with previously published works , if the author holds the rights.

im kind of wondering the same thing sarah is.  this is a great site but there seems to be less and less traffic and you can tell by the number of critiques and ect.  just kind of curious as to what is happening?

Hmm... please do let us know what the status is.

hi everyone,

i know this post is really late

i finished the blurb book on may 30th, about four minutes before the money from the contest expired

but it's finished! if you go to the blurb bookstore and type in "jillian clark" in the search, my poetry book will come up - it is called 'if i am in a room full of people, i am not having any fun'.  i have already ordered a few copies and they arrived about a week ago - i am impressed with the quality and i would encourage other people to make a book with the blurb software. it was really easy and fun to do.

if you are interested in purchasing my book, thank you!

also if you are in england, and have access to Phoenix Arts Magazine (of Imperial College) grab a copy - one of my poems was published in the latest issue and it is a really nice zine.

 -jillian
