What the fuck?!

I recently took a trip to SF and these artsy farty chuckleheads up there seem to constantly refer to graff artists who use spray paint cans as "writers."

I'm sorry but they certainly are not.  They are "drawers."

Spray painting one purposely mispelled word/name like "QWEST" on the side of a fucking bus does not constitute writing.

It may be cool, yeah.  But you are not a goddamn writer.

Get the fuck outta here with that shit.

Let me go out on a limb and suggest that, from this point forward, only if there is some amount of proofreading involved in using the alphabet should one be able to deem himself or herself a writer.

Does this bother anyone else?

Can anyone else think of any clear cut rules to ensure that this term does not get thrown around so loosely by the graff community?

what happened to the days where they were just called taggers? is there really a need for them to re-classify themselves?

I have a soft spot for well done graffiti... that being said, I think there are some, albetit few, that can call themselves writers.

That reminds me of this one movie, I totally forgot the name. Of this new york graffiti artist, who was also a pro artist and a trumpeter. He would be walking around NY, and suddenly pull out a spray can and start writing. It was just plain handwriting, no elaborate colors or letters, or anything. He'd write things about god, and philosophy, whatever he felt like writing. Or excsue me tagging, whichever.

In that sense, couldn't you call him a writer? Just cause its on a wall doesn't make it art, or not art. But I know what your saying how graffiti artist can be that obnoxious to take the title 'writer' from people. It sucks, but what can you do?

on that same note - check out the site Written on the City - it kind of blends graffiti with writing.
