Book reviews, opinions, commentary... What to read, what not to read. Cool

I never read The Scarlett Letter, even though I had it as main class material for two courses.

Pick up an anthology of Herman Melville so you can be super great!

The Great Gatsby is a classic, for those that have never read it

August 06, 2006 - 06:37 PM

I didn't like The Great Gatsby when I read it. I mean, it had a good storyline, interesting themes, a love triangle, and all, but I never liked the narrator. The whole time, he was just telling the story and I never felt like he was actually involved. I think his name was Nick? He was just there. He lacked character development and was so boring. I don't understand why Gatsby would want to hang out with him, but I think if I gave the book a second shot, I would probably like it.

Why is it one of your favorites?

yeah i think high schools try to force Gatsby on kids a little too early. Read it again now that you've had more life experiences and are generally smarter. That seems like a funny concept considering the general simplicity of the book, but it makes sense. You'll understand it more and every sentence will be delicious.

i reread it and found like reed that it made more sense when my english wasn't enforcing the idea of "green as symbolism".

read: all the king's men, before sean penn kickes fuckin ass in the movie version this winter

Green as symbolism? Oooh, how "deep".
I know you wrote that comment about two weeks ago so this topic should be dead but I haven't been on the heel press for a few weeks and I want to respond.

All I remember analyzing in Gatsby was Daisy. Something about her empty eyes, which revealed that she was so comsumed with image that she lacked a real personality or any substance. I think I was too hard on that book though so I should really give it a second shot and just attempt to enjoy it.

So what's so great about All the King's Men, before I pick it up to read?

the great gatsby is my one favorite books. i wrote an essay comparing gatsby's life to that of a magician, it made my AP Lit teacher cry. or so she told me.

August 25, 2006 - 09:59 AM

^^^do you still have that essay?

August 26, 2006 - 11:37 PM

yeah, seriously. I'd like to read it. :)
